Embedded Hardware/Software Engineer

The individual in this role will lead and contribute to software, firmware, hardware, mechanical, and electrical engineering product development initiatives for current and future products. Orange Photonics employs a wide range of technologies to deliver complex products. We’re looking for someone with broad experience, and specific strengths, who can take innovative ownership of multidisciplinary projects and drive them to completion. Being an evolving company in a dynamic industry, roles are not set in stone, and this position will touch many things have a lot of latitude in defining and choosing projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Software/Firmware development

    • Application and feature development (embedded/desktop/Web)

    • Regression testing

    • Field update processes

    • Application debug/performance analysis/tuning

    • Test frameworks

  • Hardware development

    • PCB design/layout, prototyping, component selection

    • Optical and fluid handling components

    • Battery management

    • Mechanical integration

  • Production support

    • Tools (HW/FW/SW/mixed) to aid Production staff

    • Manufacturing workflow design

    • Production/repair troubleshooting

Skill & qualifications

The ideal candidate has a technical and customer service background.

  • Embedded C++

  • Electronic design, assembly, troubleshooting

  • Control systems: motors (DC, stepper), sensors, storage

  • Strong proficiency in both Windows and Linux

  • Well-versed in communications: TCP/IP, RS232, I2C, etc.

  • Windows desktop tool development (WinForms/WPF in C#)

  • ASP.NET application development: C#/SQL/HTML5/jQuery

  • Experience with cloud-based systems (AWS: EC2, S3, etc)


  • Innovative thinker

  • 5+ years working in a similar role

  • Software, mechanical, or electrical engineering BS or technical degree required

  • Self-starter, highly motivated, and self-managing

  • Able to work independently and collaboratively

  • Proven ability to articulate the distinct aspects of products and services

  • Strong problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to drive to root cause and countermeasure complex technical, organizational and operational problem

  • Excellent listening, verbal and written communications skills

  • Must be able to explain the fundamental differences between Metallica (or AC/DC) and Winger
